Barbara Wood Roberts, PhD

Founding Director

The Intercultural Competence Lab (ICL) is dedicated to advancing the understanding of intercultural competence through diverse cultural frameworks. Building upon prior research that utilized structural equation modeling to validate assessment variables predicting intercultural competence, our current focus has expanded to include the study of tikanga Māori (Māori customs and protocols) and hui (Māori gatherings). This direction aims to deepen our appreciation of indigenous consultation practices and their applications in promoting cultural humility and perspective-taking. The ICL is affiliated with the department of psychology where Dr. Roberts serves as allied graduate faculty and adjunct instructor.

Note: “Tikanga Māori” refers to Māori customs and traditional values, while “hui” denotes Māori gatherings or meetings.
